First Take on Filming

The groups first take on filming was to have the verse in the song:
Do you still pick up the seashells on that pebble beach?
Remember when that crab came up and pinched your feet
When that old guy gave us all those drinks for free
Do you still get knocked down by that Bacardi Breeze?
As we were unable to venture to the beach we decided to add comedy and have this verse performed on a green screen, and manipulate the background to look as though it was a beach. As you can see we have used a set-up so it looks 'fake' in some sense with the monitor being in the frame. However looking back on this footage it looked extremely amateur and did not follow the codes and conventions and have the right mise-en-scene to be Incorporated within the final video.

Anciliary Task- Music Magazine

At the start of the project I was keen to create a music magazine, here above are three drafts which I created. However after research into promotion packages Magazines is not a typical convention and I have now decided not to embark upon this, even though following from previous projects this would be a strength it will not fit in with the promotion package.

Anciliary Task- Digi Pack

I have chosen to create a Digi-Pack as part of my promotion package, this is because I can use my expertise from previous projects, such as the use of Photoshop and Illustrator.

Below are some jewel case CD's already on the market with also a video found on you tube of the opening of a jewel case CD

Style Sheet

This style Sheet includes:
  • Colour
  • Font
  • Font Size
  • Final Logo
This is a huge part of any music video as it acts as the guide throughout the video as well as the ancillary tasks.

Being almost a Bible to the group the style sheet has come to great help within all fields of the project. Seen below is a test poster made which has used the style sheet throughout in aim to complete:

However throughout the project it became apparent through audience feedback that the Union Jack is a very popular design at the moment so as a group we decided that the Union Jack would be a key component throughout the whole project furthering the vintage and retro style of the mise-en-scene.

Anciliary Task- Poster Research

Researching Posters was an easy job, I could either look inside the daily newspapers were Posters are dotted around or using the internet. This was to find the different conventions needed below are a couple of posters researched which helped me to constuct my final piece:

Story Board

Constructing a detailed story board has helped a great lot through out the project so far. Helping with mise-en-scene, camera shots, camera angles, and iconography.
Below are some of the different types of shots which are going to include:

This video truly helped me to establish between the different camera angles and shots, and has been a video watched by the rest of the group when deciding what camera angles to place with the different narrative of the lyrics.

Anciliary Task- CD Cover Research

Research:
Research plays a huge part in any Media Project. This is due to inspiration as well as codes and conventions. Below is a mood sheet of different CD Cases as well as annotated copies:

Using these images which have been researched either from the internet or my own collection, I am now able to see the type of images, colours and conventions needed for a CD front cover. Further on in the course and blog you will be able to see my progression and development for my CD cover.

What is a DigiPack?

For our ancillary task, we have to construct both a magazine advertisement and a CD digipack to promote our artist. I was at first slightly unsure about what a digipack actually consists of, so I undertook some research to help construct my own. Different from the conventional JewelCase CD that the majority of CD's are housed in, a Digipack is a cardboard sleeve that can fold out into several panels.
I have decided to create a conventianl Jewel Case CD as this fits bettwer with my genre as well as appealing the the mass media market.
The Video above was found whilst researching and helped me see the difference, I have decided Jewel Case is more my chosen product as I am not aiming to create a special Cd.

Band Logo

Following research and audience feedback (Picture Below)

By gaining audience feedback we were able to see different age groups preffered style. From the connotative analysis and the decoding of the designs, we were able to decided upon the simple understated Logo which fits in with the already exisiting Logos.

Research Logo

Researching Logo's is a huge part as this will be incorportaed below are four of the biggest names in pop musics Logo's.

As you can see simplicity is key within all four Logo's, as it has to fit with every stage and part of the project be that from the t-shirt to the CD cover.

Research

To inspire our designing process we needed to research the genre of Pop music to understand the codes and conventions that we could convert or subvert in our own project.

Not wanting to simply research music videos that are similar in style and themes as our chosen song 'Thinking of Me' Olly Murs -  researching several elements of the genre and how the construction of mise en scene across media-platforms

Researching several different advertisement campaigns for different musicians. -Through this extensive research, I've found that each artists promotion is similar in it's execution and I've listed below the common elements that I've found in all of them explained through Olly Murs recent campaign.

  • 'Singles' and their accompanying Music Videos

  • Print Media: Magazine advertisements promoting the newest 'Single' and Album
  • As you can see from the image above the poster above is on a billboard, targeting passer byes.   From the list above a website is included, there was magazine articles included, a tour is available and much more.

  • Touring: Including areas of advertisement in Print Media

  • Website: Including social-networking links
